Man of Steel Review [Spoiler-free]

Man of Steel is arguably the biggest superhero movie of the year. Should you see it in theaters? Short answer: Yes.Below you will find my spoiler-free review.

*Casting: Russell Crowe was perfect for the role of Kal-El’s father. I was glad for every scene they gave us that featured him [the intro scene was fairly lengthy, but good]. While I was hesitant on a British actor portraying American comic hero Superman, I now understand the casting of Henry Cavil. He fit the role extremely well, both physically and through his performance. Adam Amy’s portrayal of Lois Lane made more sense the longer you watched.

*Action Sequences: Great, howbeit, overly long at the end. I prefer action that is short, and makes you want to rewatch again and again. Still, the climax was not nearly as long as a Transformers movie.

*Retelling: While slightly different from traditional Superman noir, this was a good retelling [unlike The Amazing Spider-Man]. One does not get the sense the story is being told differently simply so the studio could justify a remake [unlike ASM]. The story featured a lot of flashbacks and non linear storytelling, which was both good and confusing for the audience. I’m sure the director and editors found the method to be much more engaging [and unique] than a straightforward story.

*Style: The movie is serious, like the Dark Knight. You will find few laughs here. However, the style is fitting. I do wish the film had a more international battle scenes than it did.

Many films, especially superhero flicks, leave story lines open and vague at the end for potential sequels. Man of Steel works great as a standalone story, yet leaves plenty of room for a future.
